Apple

AirTag (2nd gen)

Louder, with longer finding range

$29 or $99 for four

What's new · who should skip

New: Apple's second-generation AirTag, released in January 2026, has longer Bluetooth and Precision Finding range, a louder speaker, and Precision Finding from an Apple Watch (Series 9 or Ultra 2 and later). Same design and the same replaceable coin-cell battery as the original.

Upgrades: The original AirTag, or nothing at all on their keys

Skip if: They use an Android phone: AirTag needs an iPhone or iPad (see the Chipolo LOOP instead). Skip it too if their original AirTags work fine; the changes are range and volume. Key rings and holders are sold separately.

Chipolo LOOP

iPhone or Android, recharges by USB-C

$39

What's new · who should skip

New: Chipolo's rechargeable tracker charges over USB-C instead of using a coin battery, and works with either Apple Find My or Google's Find Hub on Android. It's rated IP67 and rings at up to 125 dB. Chipolo announced it in August 2025; earlier models like the Chipolo Pop use replaceable batteries.

Upgrades: An older Chipolo or Tile, or no tracker at all

Skip if: They use an iPhone and want the simplest option: the AirTag is cheaper. It works with one network at a time, not both at once, and you'll need to recharge it every few months. Reviewers say Android has no 'safe places' setting, so it can alert you when you leave it at home.

Apple

40W Dynamic Power Adapter

iPhone 17 to 50% in about 20 minutes

$39

What's new · who should skip

New: Apple's newest phone charger delivers a steady 40W with bursts up to 60W. Apple says it charges an iPhone 17, 17 Pro or 17 Pro Max to 50% in about 20 minutes. It's small enough for a pocket.

Upgrades: An old 5W or 20W charger, or a phone that charges overnight

Skip if: They don't have an iPhone 17: older iPhones won't get the 20-minute speed, and most high-wattage USB-C chargers already work fine. No cable comes in the box.

Bandai

Tamagotchi Paradise

Zoom from a planet down to a single cell

$44.99

What's new · who should skip

New: Bandai's newest full Tamagotchi adds a zoom dial that moves from a whole planet down to a single cell, three habitats (land, water and sky) that shape how pets grow, over 50 characters, and play with other Paradise owners. It came out in July 2025.

Upgrades: The 1990s egg they had as a kid, or a Tamagotchi Uni

Skip if: They want the exact toy they had in the '90s: Bandai still sells the simpler Original Tamagotchi line. It needs daily attention, which some people find stressful rather than fun.
