Apple

AirTag (2nd gen) 4-pack

50% louder, finds things from farther away

$99 or $29 for one

What's new · who should skip

New: Apple's second-generation AirTag has a newer Ultra Wideband chip that extends Precision Finding range by up to 50%, a chime that is 50% louder, and Precision Finding on Apple Watch Series 9, Ultra 2 or later. Same design and same replaceable battery as the original.

Upgrades: The original AirTag, or nothing at all on their keys and bags

Skip if: They use an Android phone: AirTag needs an iPhone or iPad. Also skip it if they already have original AirTags that work; the changes are range and volume, not new uses. Holders and key rings are sold separately.

Amazon

Echo Dot (2026)

Now a smart home hub and Wi-Fi extender

$99.99 Kids edition $109.99

What's new · who should skip

New: Amazon's new Echo Dot, out Oct 28, adds a built-in smart home hub for lights, locks and thermostats, works as an eero Wi-Fi extender covering up to 1,000 sq ft, and has a new chip for faster Alexa+ replies. Amazon says it has 50% more bass than the previous model.

Upgrades: An older Echo Dot, or a phone they shout timers at

Skip if: They don't want a microphone listening for a wake word, or the house is set up for Google or Apple. Prime members get Alexa+ included; others pay a monthly fee for it. If they only want timers and the weather, an older Dot on sale costs much less.

JBL

JBL Go 5

Up to 10-hr battery, up from 7

$54.95

What's new · who should skip

New: The Go 5 is rated for 8 hours (up to 10 with Playtime Boost on) versus 7 on the Go 4, is rated IP68 (up from IP67) and drop-proof, and moves to Bluetooth 6.0 with Auracast. It adds edge lighting and lets you tap two Go 5s together for stereo. It's slightly bigger and heavier.

Upgrades: A JBL Go 4, or playing music from a phone speaker

Skip if: They want room-filling sound or deep bass; a speaker this size can't do that. Skip it too if they already have a Go 4, since the main gains are battery and water rating. Some buyers say no charging cable comes in the box.

Fujifilm

Fujifilm instax mini 13

Self-timer plus a built-in selfie stand

$93.95 plus ~$16 per 20 photos of film

What's new · who should skip

New: Fujifilm's newest entry-level instant camera adds a 2- or 10-second self-timer and a strap piece that props the camera up for selfies and group shots, in a reshaped body. Image quality is about the same as the mini 12.

Upgrades: An instax mini 12, or only taking photos that stay on a phone

Skip if: They have a mini 12: the self-timer is the main change. Reviewers note washed-out shots in bright sun and an always-on flash, and it runs on AA batteries. Film costs about 80 cents a print.
